Hat

The following is a portion from an [AIM] conversation I had with a friend on January 31, 2004. RichardBoyer temporarily sat at my terminal to explain the term hat to someone else. I am much too lazy to explain hat myself, and it would probably be better if RichardBoyer explains it.

RB: ever heard the BeeGees?
P2: yes
P2: i actually own their album
RB: so i assume you understand what the forced male high falsetto
    sounds like
P2: yes
RB: ok. so try to replicate that, and pass it from the back of your
throat up into your nasal cavity
RB: with the sound of the a in 'cat'
P2: ok....
RB: now you simply pulse the sound in a quick burst, the 'h' in hat
is when you start exhaling and the t is when the tongue clamps
    off the sound
RB: hat
P2: wouldn't people be scared of you if you just go around with that
    voice in a store?
RB: the sound travels rather well in large spaces, like a park or
    wallyworld
RB: probably, but who cares?
P2: wallyworld?
RB: anyway. that's what it sounds like.
RB: walmart
P2: oh
P2: people in amherst just cuckoo
RB: There's an episode of Teletubbies that i saw. the only episode
    i ever saw.
RB: for 2 minutes
P2: anyways, it's still a creepy show to me
RB: yeah, the giggling baby sun.
P2: the whole episode is two minutes?
RB: no, but that's all i saw of it
P2: long enough to be traumatized
RB: yes. the green one, Dipsy has a stick for a cranial 'adornment'
P2: ok enough talk about teletubbies... i'm starting to freak out
RB: he had a large hat, cow colored and with a hole in the top for
    his 'adornment' to fit through
P2: *shiver*
RB: the wind blew his hat off, so he started waddling like a penguin
after it saying "hat...hat...hat...hat" and then i change the channel
RB: about 2 months later i unconsciously started saying "hat"
RB: and that's where it came from
P2: haha lol
P2: Ü
P2: now, i'll probably start saying that tooo.... greeeaat
RB: it's a lexical container for thoughts without a verbal equivalent.
RB: my dad has some guy in germany thinking that it's a new fad
    with the american children
P2: that hat thing?
RB: yeah.
P2: i've never heard anyone say or use it
P2: in walmart or any other place
RB: well, because my dad was bending the truth.
RB: it only spreads from my location outward
RB: i've got my emissaries out in the populace spreading the social
    meme.
P2: haha ... starting a new trend?
RB: soon it shall appear on such television shows as 'Smallville'
'Gilmore Girls' and 'Everybody loves Raymond'
RB: grasp the concept of hat now?
P2: yes
P2: thanks
RB: :+D use it well
