Matt Chan Day
During his senior year at BostonLatinSchool, MattChan was at home about to go to sleep on a Tuesday night in April. He looked at his desk and noted the button that has his picture from when he was about seven years old. He thought to himself, "Maybe I should wear this tomorrow. Yeah. I will." And then he proceeded to go to sleep.
The next morning, he woke up, had his usual breakfast, and then prepared for school. He looked at the button again and thought, "Yeah, I'll wear this to school. I'll make it MattChanDay!" And so he pinned the button on his shirt and put on his jacket and went to school.
Upon arriving at school, he had to wait in the cafeteria (or dining hall if you want to call it that) until the homeroom bell had rung to signal the start of school. He joined the customary table where his friends were sitting. Then he posed a question.
"Do you know what today is?" His friends looked at him with some confusion and wonder.
"Wednesday?" they asked.
"Nope! It's MattChanDay!" replied MattChan as he unzipped his jacket and revealed his button.
He zipped back up his jacket to pull the same stunt again on others as his friends laughed and smiled. When homeroom bell rung, he went around parading his button and telling everyone it was MattChanDay and he proceeded to do this the entire day. Some people confused MattChanDay with his birthday (cough cough July 27 cough) and he quickly corrected them.
A good number of people, both students and teachers, had learned of the holiday. Nearly the entire senior class, maybe half the junior class, a bunch of sophomores, and a handful of other kids in lower grades had learned of MattChanDay.
At the end of the day, MattChan had to go to his show choir rehearsal. At one point, he screamed like a girl because the director talked into the microphone, both of them unaware that he was standing in front of the speaker. She said it made her day.
This was one of the best days of senior year (and his entire enrollment at THE BostonLatinSchool). MattChanDay occurred on Wednesday April 25th, 2002. Before he graduated, the Yellow Submarine Improv Troupe was doing its traditional reflections and awards for the year. It was then when they decided that the second Thursday of every May shall be MattChanDay. It is continually celebrated especially in the Yellow Submarine Improv Troupe.
Nothing particularly eventful happens on MattChanDay. All that is required is to spread the word. Feel free to make flyers and post them around or wear pins with MattChan's name on them. Or join his fan club. Or do nothing.
Note: There was also talk of a MattChanFanClub? (which may have been created on that day by MattChan). But that's a whole other story.
